Interesting idea (James Marsters quote)

I'm not really here

In case anyone is wondering, my current non-presence on LJ (and my other fannish haunts) is due to my decision to stay offline until I manage to watch Torchwood S3 ;)

Noooo! Syfy is also planning a remake of Quantum Leap!

Computer says "No"

I have clearly become a grumpy old scifi-fan

Am I the only one who is a bit disheartened by all the people at Whedonesque and elsewhere going on about Tim Minear's Alien Nation reboot, and how using the alien-human conflict as a metaphor for racism is such a brilliant and original idea, and isn't it wonderful how this won't be just another run-of-the-mill rehash, but like new BSG will use the scifi elements to deal with current issues.

Ummm.... except that the original show was all about racism. That was the whole point of it.

*sigh*

Kids these days... ;)

(I think I actually still have the made-for-tv-movies somewhere on tape... now, if I only still had a vcr...)

New beginnings

(no subject)

Tangentially related to my last Buffy S8 post, but Spike and Angel weren't the only guys in comics caught snogging recently - Shatterstar and Rictor in X-Factor have also come out, and unlike the slashy vampires, their kiss took place 'onscreen'.

Of course everyone's favourite comic writer Rob Liefield (who originally created Shatterstar), has since gone on record to complain about the lack of pouches say that he can't wait to de-gay Shatterstar again. Because apparently Shatterstar is totally straight, just like those guys on 300 ;)

Check out the comments for Peter David being surprisingly non-asshatty for a change as he defends the kiss. Note to Scott Allie - it's never a good thing when Peter David comes out looking better than you.

(for those who haven't yet heard, according to Scott Allie the Spike/Angel kiss was really funny because it "messes with Buffy's narcissism"...)

Interesting idea (James Marsters quote)

(no subject)

Ha! I have finally solved the mystery of why when I first started watching Buffy, I was convinced that James Marsters had been on Baywatch. I just caught five minutes of a Baywatch rerun, and there is a guy on the show who looks exactly like James Marsden :D

(my brain was probably also confused by the fact that, like I later found out, I had seen James Marsters before Buffy - he was in one of the two episodes of Millennium season 3 that made any kind of impression on me (for the record, the other episode had KISS))

Spike is not amused

Maybe I should make a tag titled: "I don't hate Joss Whedon, honest I don't!"

Sorry, I'm going to sound like nothing's ever going to satisfy me, but about the "controversial" Buffy Season 8 webcomic... cut spoilers for the comic and for bitter ranting about representation of gay people in media in general )

Okay, so I started off writing just a short note about a little thing that annoyed me and ended up shouting on top of a soapbox again. I blame the Bruno trailers that are shown on every ad break.

Series of Unfortunate Implications, Or: Ruuger Rewatches Firefly (Part 1)

First of all, is it just my copy, or is the printwork on the sleeve of the boxset really shoddy? If I wasn't certain that my set came from Amazon, I would have assumed I'd gotten a pirated copy.

Anyway. This was only the second time I watched Firefly - the first time was in 2004 when I had only seen S3 of Buffy (and all I knew about it was that it was that fandom where some fan gave one of the actors a CD with fanvids on it and there was a huge kerfluffle) and I probably didn't even know Joss Whedon's name. My opinion of it at the time could be summarized as "Not Babylon 5 (or even Crusade)", but in all the show was fairly entertaining and pretty as heck and I liked it enough that I was fairly excited about Serenity (even if I somehow didn't manage to see it until around 2007).

blah, blah, blah )

random bulletpoints are random )

On a sidenote, there is a really interesting discussion about feminism and nudity in Buffy going on at Cold Dead Seed forums right now. Unfortunately its in the locked forums, so I can't link to it, but if you're a member, the discussion starts in in page 6 of General Thread #217 (the one titled "Get a Buzz from this").

And now for something completely differe

(no subject)

Oh wow. I was just randomly browsing [info]fanficrants when I realised that one of the posters was using an icon I've made. An icon I made for a [info]multi_pass challenge in 2004. I don't think I ever reposted that icon anywhere else.

That brings back memories... [info]multi_pass was pretty much what got me into making icons in the first place, followed by [info]xfile_stillness and [info]babylon5contest.

Anyone want to see a post of 'nostalgic' (read: crappy) icons from my early days of icon making? :D

edit: OMG! One of the MultiPass challenges was Spike and I'm there commenting about how I should probably watch more Buffy because I have no idea who the character is! :D

edt, part deux: Speaking of icon challenges, does anyone know what's the situation with the challenges at [info]lateseasonlove? They went on a break last spring and never continued in the autumn like they were supposed to, and my icon-making muse has been somewhat absent since because it was my favourite icon challenge :(

My mother just called to say that my grandmother (her mother) has died. I don't know the details, because my mother was too upset to talk long, but I assume that my grandmother died in her sleep because the hospital would have called earlier (so that my mother could go over to say her goodbyes) if there had been any problems.

It wasn't a surprise that it happened - she wasn't supposed to survive the stroke she had in 2007 and has been in hospice care since, so we've been living almost two years with the knowledge that any day could be her last. That's actually why I cancelled my planned trip to London this year because I didn't want to risk being abroad if she (or my grandfather, who is not in very good shape either) took a turn for worse.

After my other grandmother's death in 2000 I made a concious effort to spend more time with my remaining grandparents, but with them living on the other side of the country, it has been difficult. I don't think I saw my grandmother since last September and that makes me sad :(

Interesting idea (James Marsters quote)

Kif, I have made it with a woman. Inform the men.

Just a quickie FYI that I have made icons, and they are *gasp* not B5, Buffy or X-Files:

20+ more here.

(where does one post Star Trek icons, btw?)

Always right (James Marsters quote)

OMG! There's girl cooties in my scifi!

I have things to do and places to be, but I thought this requires sharing (link via fandom_lounge on JF):

Girls don't like scifi. Round 8726.1

Short summary: IGN organised a sweepstake to promote the scifi movie District 9 where the prize was a trip to Comic Con. The catch: only men (between the ages 18-24) are allowed to enter so as to "foster a buzz for the film among a very narrow target group that the film’s promoters felt would be extremely passionate about the film’s subject matter".

(the theory is that the reason for not allowing women to participate was that the winner would be used to promote the movie and having real wimmin around would just scare the "narrow target group")

Sheesh, no wonder scifi movies don't do well in the box office when TPTB are deliberately ignoring large parts of their potential audience.

1 For the record: Yes, they do.

This is what my childhood sounds like

I've been feeling very nostalgic music-wise since the Jarre concert few weeks ago (which I still need to write about because it was FABULOUS). See, despite my love of Queen with their "no synthsesizers" disclaimer, my first musical love was actually electronic/synthesizer music, and I spent a large part of my pre-teens wearing out my the Synthesizer Greatest tapes and thinking that Ed Starink was the greatest musician ever :)

I have an especially vivid memory of one Christmas Day spent sitting under my desk in my room, eating Omar candy, reading Carolyn Sloan's Dont Go near the Water and listening to "Zoolookologie" on my walkman...

I've been digging through Youtube today for a nostalgia fix, looking up the original versions of the songs taht I loved as a kid and thought I'd share some of them:

whole lotta embedded videos under the cut - Kraftverk, OMD, Vangelis, Jarre... )

Geek

It was a very exciting 30 minutes

My computer just died on me.

I was reading my f-list when the internet connection suddenly went down and so I decided to restart the computer. And it didn't start. or it did start, and then it would again restart as soon as the Windows logo appeared, over and over in an endless loop.

I was already mentally shopping for a new computer, but decided to give it one more chance and employed my patented monkey-panic technique where I hysterically press the function keys in the hope of finding the one that enables the Windows Safe Mode. I never found that button but I did manage to accidentally start System Recovery, through which I then after few tries managed to go back to the last working restore point and fix everything. Hooray!

Can you tell that I work in the IT industry? ;)

I am random, yellow

I was just reading [info]angearia's review of the new Tales of the Vampires comic, and vague spoilers )

I was also thinking about [info]gabriellebelle's recent post about feminist characters, and was reminded of something that I have been thinking for a while now, which is that Spike is really a Bond girl (the bad-girl kind, á la May Day and Pussy Galore).

my highly scientific evidence )

In conclusion, totally a Bond girl.

A question, oh camera-savvy folks on my flist

Does anyone know if Canon Powershot SX110 is any good? I just saw it on sale, and I really need to buy a new camera. Or should I just upgrade to a 'real' camera while I'm at it? Canon EOS 1000D 18-55 DC KIT seems to be on sale as well. Or can anyone recommend some other good but decently priced camera?

New B5 book!

[info]vjs2259, have you already seen this?

One one hand, you could probably find almost all of that material online with a little digging. On the other hand... *waaants*
My fandom

The systems at work are - surprise, surprise - down again, so memes

First a general meme that I nicked from... someone.

Do you remember your first ever thing you were fannish about as a wee one? )

Then another one that's been doing rounds:

Comment to this entry and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

[info]selenak gave me my Big Three of fandoms - X-Files, Babylon 5 and Buffy.

Let's do this chronologically:

XF, B5 & BtVS )
Eurovision Song Contest

Since I'm going to miss the finale Saturday, here is a ESC picspam

For those who live outside Europe and are not familiar the fabulousness that is the Eurovision Song Contest, let me just say two words: dancing polarbears.

Where else can you see half-naked gladiators humping a miniature Stargate? )

Also, I'm actually kinda starting to like Finland's song (though I still think we should have sent Signmark's "Speakerbox" which came second - it would have been the first song performed in sign language on ESC).
