Yet another overly-complicated poll, this time about Dollhouse
I haven't even answered the comments to my last poll yet, but I have another dentist's appointment today (I didn't get the tooth removed Monday, because turns out it'll require oral surgery, and I'll also have to have one filling replaced (which will happen today)), so you get a new poll as a distraction.

Poll is anonymous so that people can answer without fearing the wrath of Browncoats or anti-Whedonites, or revealing that they are being naughty and torrenting the show ;)

I'm surprised that I put down Stage Fright as my favourite episode, but I think it was (and I've read the pilot) - I liked Jordan taking her parameters and reinterpreting them. I was also quite surprised that Echo is actually one of the things I like about the show! She's growing on me.

I have to say that despite the fact that Eliza Dushku has yet to convince me of her acting talent, Echo is the one character that most intrigues me - the premise of her character is interesting, and I do feel (sorry) for her already. I just wish the show would have skipped the emotional porn and not concentrated on her being a victim.

Yeah, I far prefer her scurrying around the house with Sierra, knowing more than they realise. Disempowering her during missions just implies she needs Ballard to run in and save her.

Heh, my answer to most of these was "MOAR OPTIONS", but I'm also not actually watching the show. ;) Mostly I'm incredibly lazy, rather than especially law abiding or having Qualms; I'm curious to see exactly how problematic it is, seeing as I have some issues with Joss' other stuff, and would like to get an idea of how it's playing out. But I've already got a bunch of stuff to catch up on when I have a chance, and this is pretty low on my list of priorities.

I think it's fair to judge a show based on What You Have Seen Of It, even if that's only the first four episodes. I think it's also a good idea to let people who are fans of the show make a case and point out awesome things about it to give it a second chance. I am thinking of Crusade, here, personally. :)

Dollhouse has some interesting ideas (and I Love scifi that deals with identity issues), but IMO so far it has been neither intriguing nor really controversial, just the same old crap as everything else on tv.

As a result, it has become my "dishwashing show" - I have certain shows, like Heroes, which I don't really like, as such, but I'm intrigued by some of the ideas, and since they're not good enough for me to waste time watching, but not brainless enough to watch while tinkering with the computer, I usually record (or download) multiple episodes and then watch them while doing something boring like washing the dishes or sorting the laundry.

How have you liked the show so far?

I picked "It's been a huge disappointment", but actually, I wasn't expecting much of this show so I can't really say I'm disappointed--it's more of a case of "geez, this show sucks even more than I thought it would".

What do you think about Eliza Dushku as Echo?

Dear god, she's *awful*--her acting has been making me cringe.

What's been your favourite episode so far?

I don't have a favorite episode, LOL. They've all sucked. I have no idea why I'm still watching the show. Maybe it's like a train wreck, it's terrible, but you can't quite look away.

Will you continue watching Dollhouse?

I really don't know. If I'm bored enough, I might.

Do you think it's fair to judge a show based on four episodes?

Haha, no, but I'm totally judging. *grin*

Really? I would never have guessed. :D

After Dollhouse started, I've actually tried to think of an show that I ended up liking even though the first few episodes were crap (or I just didn't like them for some reason), and the closest I can think of a situation like that is with Angel and Crusade - Angel I didn't like first because Angel himself was my least favourite character on Buffy (even though I later came to love him on AtS) and Crusade had one of those crappy network-butchered pilot episodes.

But unlike Angel, Dollhouse doesn't have a Jossverse character that I don't like to 'ruin' it (even if Eliza Dushku is probably my least favourite of the Whedonverse alumni) and unlike Dollhouse, Crusade, even with it's crappy pilot, had better fleshed-out characters from the start.

I was thinking about the question of whether it's fair to judge after only four episodes, and my answer is that four episodes is an eternity. I knew Firefly was good after one. I knew I'd love BtVS somewhere in the middle of the two-part opener. And a couple of days ago, I was 15 minutes into the BSG miniseries when I realized it was going to be great.

So the best thing I can say about Dollhouse right now is that it might turn out to be one of those shows where you assure your friends they have to slog through the first parts to get the setup.

Agreed, although I would say that Buffy is one of those slogging shows, too. I could see potential, but I didn't really think, "Wow, this show is worth it" until Prophecy Girl.

So I do think there's some truth to the people who've said, "Joss is a slow burner. He always takes several episodes to really get going." But honestly? I think that's a horrible flaw for a TV writer. It is NOT impossible to write a great pilot - I could name a dozen shows that I loved right from the very first episode. If Joss can't do that, I don't blame people for not wanting to stick around until it gets good.

I'm torn about this show. Right now it seems like a cheap ripoff of Alias, but I remember how much I wasn't drawn to Buffy in the first few episodes.

So here are the problems as I see them:

1) Joss is known for cleverness, and none of that is evident on this show. Even if you don't like them, Buffy (for sure), Angel (to greater or lesser degree) and Firefly can all be recognized as (for lack of a better word) clever. And there is no evidence of that so far in this show - no witty repartee, no nods at the audience because he's playing with tropes (be they western-gun toting ones or lone-angsty hero ones). And I think that I was willing to have a lot of patience with some of the other things he's apt to do, if he was trying to do it while being clever.

2) Joss does better with ensembles. even Angel really hit its stride when it was more than 3 people who were part of the mission (at least, that's my opinion :D). this is NOT an ensemble cast - they can't be, because they can't even remember each other to BE an ensemble. And the supporting characters, while interesting, don't an ensemble make.

3) This feels like straight up sensational TV. I didn't watch Pretender/DarkAngel but I did watch Alias and it seems to be in the same vein - there's the hot chick who does cool shit and a bevy of hot chicks around her, and some hot men too (hey ladies, we haven't forgotten you!) and that's IT. And said hot chick can't figure out her own issues and needs the masculine to help her and bang!wham! there's a show. Now, you could argue Buffy was like that in certain respects (look at who saves her life in season one... etc) but it had the cleverness to also be about the cheerleader who can kick ass, so I was willing to forgive it my misgivings.

4) Ok, I know this is probably me and not many others, but OH MY GOD THE CAMERA WORK IS LAME. What happened to the Joss who wanted to play with angles to create different moods? He did it in Buffy and he did it a whole ton in Firefly and he loved his long shots and what happened to that guy behind the camera?? because it's not here. This thing is so standard in terms of the camera work that it BUGS me.

That all being said, I'm still watching it. There's nothing else on Friday nights. I watch other things (90210 anyone?) that I think are LAMER than this, amazingly enough, and I don't mind wasting my time with it in the hopes that it might get a little better. I don't think it'll get picked up for another season, and I'm not sure it needs to. I am so bummed that Eliza doesn't seem to have any ability to act like different people, because had she been better I might have been more willing to forgive parts of the show (but she's sadly NOT. I keep hoping, but... yeah).

LOVE the OH JOSS NO. That is seriously going to be my new phrase everytime I read one of his interviews.
